Character Restrictions
Any new character created by a player in The Domains of Dread must observe the following restrictions regarding premise and content:
- They are to be at least 18 years of age, or the age of adulthood for their race. They should have the mental and emotional faculties of an adult and be capable of adult decision-making, even if they are expressly considered naive.
- The background of the character should have some correlation to any choice made in-game and furthermore be plausible for a character entering the world at the
3rd level
, or the4th level
should a Mist Token option be selected. Characters cannot claim an "absence" or "theft" of a former power as an excuse for a low level. Recall that The Domains of Dread is a low-medium gothic horror fantasy and therefore implausible or otherwise high magic backstories are more likely to be rejected during the application process. - Outlanders who enter the world at the
3rd level
cannot have had any previous experience or time spent in the Realms of Terror - when they enter the world is also the first time they have entered the demiplane fictionally. If they are entering the world at the4th level
then they are allowed to have spent up to 60 days inside the demiplane fictionally and have been Misted to their spawn location rather than to the demiplane as a whole. - Natives cannot be the legitimate members of noble houses, even minor ones, without taking the Mist Token option and expressing as much to the Game Masters during the application process. Illegitimate or otherwise disowned members of these houses do not have to take the Mist Token option, but should still disclose their character's circumstances during the application process so that the world may react appropriately to their existence.
- Characters should not work professions associated with proximity to erotic roleplay per the Game Rules. Having these details in a backstory are acceptable so long as they are no longer relevant and are approached with care.
- Characters must have a viable first and last name, no matter if what they will provide to other characters will differ. No character may have a "true name" that is a mononym or title. They should not be references to famous people, even if fictional.
- The choice of class should have relevance to the character's backstory and present circumstances. Class as an in-character ideologue is far more relevant in The Domains of Dread than what may be past experience. Please read the class page prior to applying. While certain liberties are expected and are welcome, classes with narrow alignment/conduct requirements such as Paladin are especially subject to scrutiny in addition to their bespoke application form. It should be assumed that if a class or archetype is evil only, such as Dark Knight, there exists expectation to define those characters beyond mere acts of evil.
- Any character may be an antagonist without being a Dread Figure. If it is the player's intent from the beginning to angle a character's story toward any of the available Dread Figure templates, that should be disclosed during the application process so that Game Masters may help in the telling. It is acknowledged that antagonist play is difficult and often best aided by Game Masters - however, if the character is not a Dread Figure, then they must observe all rules regarding character versus character conflict accordingly.
- Falsehoods in how a character presents their backstory are acceptable, but anything provided to the Game Masters during the application process should be the truth. Deviations from the application due to changing one's mind are also acceptable so long as that the changes are disclosed to the Game Masters where particularly relevant, such as membership of a noble house or the character's "true name".
- A player may have up to 2 characters who do not have Dread Figure templates active at a time. If a third character is applied for, Game Masters will inquire as to which character should be shelved to make room for the incoming character. Attempting to misrepresent who you are as a player to get around the active character limit will be grounds for being banned from play.
